The Christian Church has always connected with people at special occasions in their lives. The occasions are often marked by a desire to come close to God, often at the beginning of a new phase in a person’s life, by seeking God’s blessing.

Baptisms of both infants and adults take place within the main Sunday morning service.  Preparation for baptism is undertaken by the Vicar and tailored to the needs of the family concerned. It is a very special occasion for all of us.

Thanksgiving for the birth of a child is an alternative to baptism where parents feel a service for baptism may follow when the child is older and able to make his or her own profession of faith.  This service may be appropriate where the parents do not feel able to take on the vows of baptism.

Each year, St James’s prepares people of all ages for Confirmation before the bishop.  People are prepared by a course of study to learn about the Christian faith and how it is lived out in the world, considering the many challenges that will be faced. It is a significant moment in a person’s life and often is a turning point towards following God more closely.

Marriages take place from time to time for those who live in the parish or who now live away but feel St James’s to be their spiritual home.  The vicar and others prepare couples for this special occasion.

St James’s is a wonderful church in which to hold the funeral of a loved one.  Its quiet and unhurried location allows families space and time to come to terms with their loss.  The beauty of God’s creation all around for us to see is a gentle reminder of his love for each of us.
