Churches Together in Winscombe
St James’s Church, the Lynch Chapel (URC and Baptist), and the Friends Meeting at Sidcot, have been working together for a number of years. In 2000 the Methodist Church at Sandford and the Roman Catholic Church in Cheddar, joined with us to form “Churches Together in Winscombe” and affiliate to “Churches Together in Britain and Ireland”. During a typical year, ecumenical services and events include:
- A Lent Study course of five weekly House Groups across the parish following a common theme. The course and leaders are introduced at a Shrove Tuesday pancake party.
- On Good Friday there is a silent procession through the village to “The Woodborough” for an open-air service.
- An open-air Sunrise service on Easter Day at 6.30 am.
- Following the Michaelmas Fair there is a social evening in the marquee and a shared service on the Sunday morning.
- A Christmas card with details of all services is delivered to every house in the village and a group of carol singers tour the centre of the village collecting for charity.
- A Quiet Day or Retreat and, in some years, a Weekend away at Lee Abbey also form part of our programme.
- We have developed a link with a growing church in Mangochi, Malawi, through a former local missionary. Support from Winscombe has enabled the completion of their building and the opening of a nursery school. Churches Together in Winscombe also have a number of other working groups.
